Long considered the go-to “generic” Confederate kepi, it’s really not all that generic but it is a neat cap and it was worn at Franklin! The place of manufacture of the “Crews” kepi is uncertain, but it was possibly among the many issued to the Army of Tennessee in the weeks before Franklin, making it a unique example of a late-war, Western, government-made cap. While often reproduced not too many vendors have gotten quite as close to the original as these reproductions from Starbuck, which are made from vegetable-dyed cassimere or Tart’s “drab” cassimere—both of which replicate the weave and appearance of the original cloth nicely—have a black (not brown) leather visor, and cloth covered buttons on the non-functioning cloth chinstrap.
