While not a required or even a government-provided piece of equipment, numerous surviving originals in various configurations show that artillerymen often made or acquired tools to help them prepare paper time fuzes. This example, reproduced from an original by Austin Fox, has engraved brass rules marked in eighths and tenths of an inch, and when closed over a fuze positioned at the desired length will gouge the fuze to indicate where to cut it.
